Kinja'd!!!3

The Audi Quattro system uses a Torsen based AWD system which utilizes a mechanical connection to split drive to the axles of the car. This system cannot divert all of its power to one axle at once for the fourth generation Quattro system (what’s on your Allroad). The newest fifth generation quattro can send all power to the rear now once the traction control is actuated.

The WRX system uses a viscous coupling based AWD system that uses a series of discs and a silicone based liquid that increases in viscosity once shear forces are applied to it through the discs within the diff. The increased viscosity will then allow for the discs to have a difference in drive being sent to them and thus the wheels will be driven at different rates depending on which tires have more grip.

One time when I was working for AAA, I towed a Subaru that an idiot owned. The temperature came up, he kept driving. The idiot light came on, he kept driving. The car started physically slowing down, he kept driving. By the time I got there, the whole drivetrain was totally locked up...put it in neutral and all four wheels were stuck.

Half an hour of cooling later during the tow, and it rolled right off the truck. Subarus are pretty good.

How’s your allroad experience so far?

Prepare for a lot of jokes about how the car is going to break all the time from people who have never owned one. My allroad is still the best car I’ve ever owned...I sold new Lexus LS460s, but when I got into my 150k mile allroad at the end of the day it always felt like a really high quality car. 10/10, would own again.

i’m still waiting for plates so i havn’t really gotten to drive it but it did start when I showed it to my friend tonight. Its very nice, on the inside. It has a bit of a vibration at highway speed but i’ve read that the wheel style I have is very prone to getting of out balance with even a little dirt.

so like in my wifes old AWD Escape, if one tire broke free it would just sit there and spin. what would happen in the Audi?

Yeah, I had the same wheels...they also kinda suck with snow, they get it stuck between the spokes pretty easy. Also, those screws on there aren’t for show, they’re real, so make sure you’re not missing any because that could throw off the balance too.

When I bought mine it had a warped front brake rotor, which somehow fixed itself just through driving in the first two days. Great car, my allroad. It was Atlas Gray, I quite like your green one.

When i researched how the AWD system in my Audi C5 worked, it pissed me off even more that it drove like such a pig even with all the Torsen this and electronic that. Clumsy C5 will always be the slowest most understeery wagon i’ve ever owned...

.... that’s why i am not killing it. It’ll take forever, but the krieg wagen will ride again one day

Theoretically the tire which broke free should spin momentarily until the ABS module realizes what is going on. Then the brakes would get actuated on that free wheel in order to try and divert the drive to the other wheel of that axle (the front and rear diffs are open diffs) in an effort to try and regain traction.

Addicted has it more or less. Torsen center and open f/r diffs. it will act very similar in practice to your wrx.

I don’t see myself buying a Subaru (short of maybe a 360, Brat or GL wagon), but when it comes to choosing an AWD based car, I think I’d go for the company that basically doesn’t offer anything else....

I’m not a huge fan of their motors, but they’ve got good ground clearance (stock), and are pretty well proven. A clean, well kept stock one will behave itself better than anything else I would expect (in the AWD segment of it’s respective class, compact sedan, wagon, CUV).

From a cost perspective, would you be inclined to agree?

Good prior owners help too. Mine was a 1 owner, dealer serviced car. My worry about opposaurus’s was that it was a car somebody bought at auction with no service history...and with these engines, if they can't prove the t-belt has been done, that means you need to do it.

Yeah, they seem to be a pretty durable car overall, and good value for what you’ll pay. A buddy of mine bought a late 90s Legacy GT wagon that needed a clutch for $1000, did the repair and then drove the car into the ground over the next five years. Subframe rust is what got it off the road. Then he sold the wheels, headlights, hood, engine/tranny for $1200, scrapped the shell, and basically got paid a few hundred dollars to own the car for five years.

The escape has a much diff system. It also depends on the front & rear diff. My old STi had limited slip front and rear. So all 4 tires spun at all times. But I say your allroad has an open diff somewhere.

thats cool, and kinda what I expected. the WRX took some effort to get it to break free, I’m guessing the Audi, with the extra 1000 lbs will be even harder.

I was looking at the stats last night and it hits peak torque at 1850rpm while the WRX and outback were 4000 and 4400 rpm. what advantage/disadvantage would that have?

So was mine. 1 owner, bought at a BMW dealer lot. Fully stamped service manual. I (a brand dealership master technician) babied that baby! It just went bad on way more occasions than i’ve ever experienced with any car i’ve owned. Not even my 2 years parked under a tree e28 gave me so many issues. Still, that doesn’t mean they are ALL like this,

What kind of shifter did you have on your AR?

The stock one on my A6 is SOOOOO sloppy. The first to second shift has a colossal throw.

JHM Solid Shifter. Had to have a custom knob made for it...nobody does a white Hurst style knob with the Euro 6 speed pattern. It's a really good shifter, install was pretty easy.

What advantage does it have? Advantage for what? This will help explain (as best I know how) the advantage of a low torque peak for power, but for traction...I’m not sure there is much in it. It just means more power down low is all.

As I recall, noticeably shorter and more positive. They also include three different springs for the reverse lockout...I went with the firmest one, which to me gave the whole shifter a more solid feel. It’s a super nicely built piece of equipment, I recommend doing it along with the bushings...I think JHM sells urethane ones, but even new OE rubber ones would be a good upgrade if you’re at a higher mileage.

The stock lever isn’t threaded...my knob was actually held on with a hose clamp, but it had been removed before. If you pull up the trim around the boot and pull the boot up over the knob, you'll be able to see the bottom of the knob and what's holding it. That said, you could use the hose clamp method and absolutely reuse your stock knob. I've still got the stock wood knob for that car...I needed something to remember it by.

Thanks for the info though!

Kinja'd!!!1

It’s not notchy at all, since you’re not changing the linkage or anything...if you did the urethane bushings though you might find it notchy. The stops are more positive with it, because the whole thing is heavy as fuck. For me, it was a great street upgrade, and it was still perfectly comfortable to drive every day.

The most difficult part of it is the adjustment. You basically have to move the shifter around so you can get all the gears, and even that takes maybe 15 minutes. All in the install will take you maybe an hour and a half.

They really were. The allroad exacerbated that by having kind of a granny first gear, because it was an ‘off road’ vehicle. So you’d stand on it in first, nothing would happen, then hooooooly shit turbo power for like half a second because first gear was SO SHORT, then this huge long dumb shift, then second gear and the revs are way down because 2nd is super tall compared to first. After that though it was great, 2nd-3rd-4th pulls with the JHM shifter were one of my favorite things. And oddly enough, 6th gear pulls were my favorite thing overall with that car.

Kinja'd!!! jkm7680 > That Bastard Kurtis - An Attempt to Standardize My Username Across Platforms

Kinja'd!!!1

Same deal with the A6, haha. I get out of first as fast as I can, but the throw is just amazingly long that pulls are a little challenging at time from a stop.

The turbo power is amazing though, I love it. 6th gear pulls and the wonderful amount of torque in every gear is great also.
